Immature Stages of Rhipiceridae

Detailed information on immature stages of Rhipiceridae is being acquired.  However, Craighead (1921) reported on a mature larva of Sandalus niger Knoch (Fig. 241) being taken from a pupa of Cicada that had made its emergence burrow and reached the surface of the soil.  It was thought to have developed as a parasitoid, and its body showed modifications, such as a reduction in the legs, which is typical for this life style.  It was robust in form, and the 9th tergum had a sclerotized tip and bore a pair of broadly conical cerci.
